REIKI ENERGY EXERCISE

Learning to sense Reiki energy is much like learning a new language.  The sensations are often subtle and may take some time and practice to become adept at sensing the energy.  Here are some descriptions of what folks may sense when feeling the Reiki energy.

Warm

Radiating

Like heat from a candle flame or your coffee mug

Cool

Still

Like the air inside of your freezer

Static

Magnetic

Like hair drawn to a balloon

Tacky

Sticky

Like tape or silly putty

Vibrating

Shimmering

Like the feel of one’s vocal cords when humming

Pulsating

Wave-Like

Like a heartbeat or the rhythm of gentle ocean waves over your toes

Stretchy

Elastic

Like a rubber band expanding and contracting

Tingling

Bubbly from the inside out

Like numb fingers coming back to life, without the pain

Swirling

Circular

Like a mini-whirlpool or water going down the drain

Remember, these sensations are very subtle.  You may feel more than one of these sensations or none at all.  Some folks say that when you feel nothing at all, the energy is addressing emotional or spiritual issues versus physical ones.  The beauty of Reiki is that as long as you and the recipient give the intent for healing, the energy will go where it is most needed whether either of you feel anything or not.  It’s like taking an aspirin for a head ache or a sprained ankle.  You don’t have to tell the aspirin where to go.  The innate intelligence of your body will send it where it is most needed to serve the body’s highest and best good.

Now let’s try a few things to see if you can feel your own energy.

1.  Begin by gently shaking your hands, flexing your fingers, and then relax them.

2.  Take a couple deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth.

3.  Rub your palms together. Then press them together in the Namaste position while raising your elbows slightly to increase the pressure.  Hold the pressure to the count of 5, release, and repeat 2 more times.

4.  With fingers together and palms slightly cupped, gently press and release the hands together creating a slight suction action between the palms.

5.  You should begin to feel a little ball of heat growing between your palms.  Play with it a little bit to register that particular sensation in your mind.

6.  As you continue to play with this energy, close your eyes and begin to visualize this sensation as a little ball of moving/vibrating energy.

7.  Keep your eyes closed, keep focusing on the ball, then begin to see how far apart you can pull your hands and still feel the energy ball.

8.  If you come apart too far, then gently come back in till you sense it again.  Begin to move your palms in and out to see if you notice a push-n-pull sensation as your energy ball begins to expand.

9.  Keeping your eyes closed helps to focus on the sensations you are experiencing.  Experiment and see how large the ball expands between your hands.  Once you’ve made it as large as you can and still be able to feel the sensation, open your eyes to see just where your hands are.  Now gently press the ball of energy into your heart chakra

If you are having problems feeling anything with this exercise, then try a few of these alternatives:

Close your eyes and place your hand as close to your cheek as you can, without actually touching it.  Do you feel anything?  Heat?  Where?  Fingers?  Palms?  Any other sensations?  Feel free to check all 5 senses.

Another way is to hold one palm open and slowly pass the other open palm over it.  You have a spinning chakra in the center of each palm.  You can feel a subtle displacement of energy as you pass one chakra through the other.

For some folks, the back of the hand is more sensitive.  So hold one palm up and pass the top of the other hand over it.  Once again you’ll feel the displacement or merging of energy from the chakras.

Another option is to hold one palm open and take the pointer finger of the other hand and draw an “X” through the chakra of the open palm.  You can also do a circle counter-clockwise and then again clock-wise to see if you notice an subtleties.  The hand has a chakra out the top as well as the palm, so you might want to try feeling this energy as well.  Some folks thing the top of the hand can be more sensitive, especially if the palm is calloused.

Now that you can feel your energy, work with a partner and see if you can create a ball between one of your hands and one of theirs.  Practice will heighten one’s sensitivity and increase one’s awareness of Reiki energy.  So play with it whenever you are just waiting around in a line, or a meeting, or a class that doesn’t involve a lot of concentration.
